Joanna organized large international survey exhibitions for the International Center of Photography, edited books for Aperture, and freelanced at numerous book publishers and prominent magazines as a photo researcher, photo editor, and copyeditor. She has taught at ICP and Barnard College.

She holds a BA from the University of Massachusetts in English, and an MA in Liberal Studies (Film Studies Certificate) from CUNY’s Graduate Center, where she wrote on the genre of documentary film.

 She lives in NYC’s Lower East Side and in the Catskills. Obsessions include history, writing craft, and also gardens, chickens, and dogs. She does not have a middle name.
